It was only in last week of March that Gurratan, a lawyer and community activist like his brother, had expressed his intent to enter politics. In less than three months he has reached the Ontario assembly.
In addition, NDP has emerged as the main opposition party in Ontario with 40 seats, while the election has been won by Progressive Conservative (PC) Party. Ruling Liberal Party, which governed the province for 15 years, was relegated to third position with just seven seats.
Meanwhile, six other candidates of Punjabi-origin from both the parties have reached the assembly. They include NDP’s Sara Singh from Brampton (Centre) and Amarjot Sandhu from Brampton (West). PC’s Prabh Sarkaria won from Brampton (South). NDP has won four out of five seats of Brampton, hometown of Jagmeet.
