LUDHIANA: Conceived almost three years back, the plan to upgrade the multi-storey parking lot and MC zonal office near Mata Rani chowk may finally come back on track as the Ludhiana municipal corporation will soon float tenders to hire a transaction adviser in order to prepare a detailed project report.
As per the plan, the oldest MC office and the multi-storey parking lot, built in the same compound, are supposed to see a revamp which will help resolve a major parking issue in markets in the old city. The new parking facility was supposed to accommodate approximately 3,000 two-wheelers and 500 cars at any given point of time. The existing office and parking lot are spread in 3.5 acres of land.
The upgrade proposal was initially floated by a private firm in 2020. Former mayor Balkar Sandhu had taken it up too. According to the plan, the firm was to construct a 7-storey building in place of MC zone A office near Mata Rani chowk and a new multi-storey parking lot replacing the existing one. The company was supposed to sign a partnership deal with the MC, which was not supposed to spend a single penny on the project.
The former mayor decided to take up the proposal in the MC general house. In November 2020, the house had given approval to the proposal. But the process remained on the back burner. It was only in January 2023 when another proposal to hire a transaction adviser was approved.
MC’s executive engineer Balwinder Singh said, “We are going to float tenders for hiring a transaction adviser who will prepare the detailed project report for the project. We want a firm that can develop both structures for us.”
The MC had also carried out a survey in the old markets of the city to get a rough idea about vehicular movement in these places. According to the survey, on an average, 350 cars, 2,000 to 2,500 two-wheelers and 500 tempos entered the markets every day.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to double the parking fees at 38 lots managed by its staff as a measure to discourage car usage amid high air pollution levels. The increased rates will be in effect until January 31, 2024. The rest of the parking lots managed by contractors will not be affected. In 2017, NDMC had also increased parking rates four times. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, however, has no plans to raise parking fees due to difficulties in implementation.
BMC demolishes unauthorized areas in Mumbai's 15-storey Malad building
The BMC's P-North ward office has demolished unauthorized constructions in a building in Mumbai's Malad East. The building, originally meant to be residential, had commercial shops constructed in the basement without residents' knowledge. The building developer had been issued a notice last year to remove the unauthorized development, but failed to comply. The BMC has now taken action to demolish the unauthorized work.
