Man arrested for appearing in Punjab School Education Board exam for his friend

LUDHIANA: The Division number 8 police arrested a real life 'Munna Bhai' for appearing in a class X examination of Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) in place of his friend.


The accused was caught red handed by the examination center superintendent, as the photo of the student displayed on the admit card did not match with the imposter. Importantly, the imposter is also a class XII student.

The arrested accused has been identified as Abhishek Giri, 19, of Shimlapuri. The police also booked his friend Sukhraj Singh, who had sent Abhishek to appear in the exam.

The PSEB has made an examination center for the students of open school. An exam of Punjabi-A was scheduled on Friday for class X for which at least 375 students had appeared.

Examination center superintendent Ravinder Kaur said that the students were accommodated to their seats and the exam had started. Immediately after that she started checking the admit cards of the students and taking their signatures on the attendance sheet. When she checked the admit card of the accused, she found the picture on the admit card and the person who had appeared in the exam, no similarly. The admit card had a picture of a youngster wearing a turban however the examinee was not wearing a turban.

Initially, the youngster said that he is Sukhraj Singh however when questioned hard, he confessed that he came to appear in the exam for his friend. The accused told his real name is Abhishek Giri who is also a student of class XII. Thereafter, the superintendent lodged a complaint with the police.

Sub inspector Vijay Kumar, SHO at police station Division number 8, stated that Sukhraj Singh, 22 is a friend of arrested accused Abhishek, 19. During the questioning, it is found that Abhishek agreed to appear in the exam merely because of his friendship with Sukhraj as Giri was good in studies. In fact, he said that he was unaware that it is a crime, which cannot be believed.

A case under sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of IPC has been lodged against Giri and Sukhraj. The police are trying to trace Sukhraj.
