Ludhiana industrialists champion Japanese ‘Kaizen’ culture to slash costs, boost performance.
Ludhiana: Local industry leaders are turning to Japanese management philosophies to navigate an increasingly competitive global market, with 34 teams converging this week for the 17th National Kaizen Competition.Organised by the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU), the event serves as a showcase for "Kaizen" — the practice of continuous, incremental improvement — which has become a lifeline for companies looking to reduce waste without heavy capital investment.
The Philosophy of Continuous ImprovementKaizen (meaning "change for the better") focuses on the collective effort of all employees—from the factory floor to the boardroom—to identify and eliminate "Muda" (waste). Participating teams presented real-life case studies demonstrating how minor adjustments in workflow led to significant gains in productivity and quality. The competition highlighted several core methodologies aimed at driving sustainable growth, like waste minimization (streamlining assembly lines to reduce idle time and material scrap), process optimization (simplifying complex manufacturing steps to lower operational costs), and employee engagement (fostering a culture where workers are motivated to suggest small-scale innovations)."The best ideas are born from the exchange of knowledge," said Upkar Singh Ahuja, president of CICU. "The objective of this competition is to motivate industries to make Kaizen a way of life, simplifying processes while saving costs."Judging ExcellenceThe technical merits of the presentations were evaluated by a jury of eminent professionals, including Arvind Dhingra of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College. Judges looked for "intangible benefits" —s uch as improved workplace safety and morale — alongside hard data on cost reduction. J S. Bhogal, organising secretary and CEO of CICU, emphasised that these competitions are vital for cross-industry learning. By witnessing the best-implemented Kaizen strategies, smaller industrial units can adopt proven techniques to achieve operational excellence.
