Ludhiana family booked for Rs 23 lakh fraud in overseas settlement scam
Ludhiana: A woman and her parents have been charged with defrauding a city resident of Rs 23 lakh under the pretext of securing his son's immigration to Canada.An FIR was registered at the women's police station against Harpreet Kaur and her parents, Avtar Singh and Gurmeet Kaur, of Tarn Taran, following a complaint by Gurcharan Singh of Shimlapuri. Gurcharan Singh's son, Manpreet Singh, aspired to settle in Canada. Gurcharan claims that the family was introduced to Harpreet Kaur and her parents, who promised to facilitate his relocation on a spouse visa, provided the family covered all expenses. Upon agreement, Manpreet and Harpreet Kaur got married.Gurcharan Singh alleged that he paid Rs 23 lakh to the accused to cover visa arrangements and college fees. Manpreet reached Canada, but instead of applying for his permanent residency, Harpreet Kaur filed for divorce. When Gurcharan approached her family for a refund, they allegedly refused to return the money. After failing to recover his funds, Gurcharan Singh filed a police complaint on Aug 22, 2024.Investigating officer ASI Sukhwinder Singh confirmed that after a preliminary inquiry, police had registered an FIR against Harpreet Kaur and her parents under sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).MSID:: 119308101 413 |
