Late BJP stalwart’s grandson joins Shiromani Akali Dal in Ludhiana ahead of Amit Shah’s visit.
Ludhiana: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a high-profile defection in Punjab just days before a scheduled rally by Union home minister, Amit Shah, with the grandson of late party stalwart Satpal Gosain jumping ship to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).Amit Gosain formally joined the SAD on Tuesday morning in the presence of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal. The move is seen as a strategic play by the Akali Dal to capture the Hindu vote in the Ludhiana Central constituency ahead of the 2027 state elections.A Legacy Shift in LudhianaWhile the younger Gosain has maintained a lower profile than his grandfather — a former minister and deputy speaker — he carries the weight of a significant political lineage. His departure was marked by a poignant social media post in which he claimed he was leaving the "saffron party" with a "heavy heart," citing disillusionment with its current direction. The SAD has immediately positioned Gosain as the in-charge for the Ludhiana Central constituency. The seat has historically been a sticking point for the BJP; their repeat candidate, Gurdev Sharma Debi, failed to secure a win in the last two outings.Strategic ManoeuvringParty insiders suggest the SAD's embrace of Gosain is a calculated move to install a credible Hindu face in a district dominated by Hindu voters. The move also echoes the complex history of the Gosain family. The late Satpal Gosain, despite decades of loyalty to the BJP, famously defected to Congress for a single day in his later years before being persuaded to return — a move many believe diminished his standing within the party hierarchy at the time.Security and Regional IdentitySpeaking after his induction, Amit Gosain cited the deteriorating security climate in Punjab as a primary motivator for his exit. Gosain claimed the state's law-and-order situation has "collapsed," arguing that only a regional party can effectively govern Punjab. Having grown up in an era where the BJP and SAD were long-term allies, Gosain noted that "the flags of both parties" once flew together on his terrace, suggesting the transition to Akali Dal leadership would be seamless.SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal welcomed the move, stating he expects Gosain to work for the betterment of both the constituency and the party's regional mission.
