JALANDHAR: The voter turnout in Punjab’s Doaba region was the lowest in

Central constituency (60.65%) and the highest in Balachaur constituency (73.77%) when the state went to polls on Sunday, revealed data on Monday.

The region comprises four districts and 23 of the total 117 seats in Punjab assembly.

The average for Jalandhar district was around 66.97%. In the district, Nawanshahr recorded a turnout of 70.75%. In Hoshiarpur district, the average turnout was 68.66%. Kapurthala, from where Congress’s

was in the fray, recorded a turnout of 67.77%.

Data showed that compared to rural areas, polling was low in urban segments. Only four constituencies, one in each of the four districts, polled above 70%. These included Balachaur,

Sultanpur Lodhi

(72.55%), which had a four-cornered contest,

Shahkot

(72.77%) and Chabbewal (71.19%).

Of the four seats, Chabbewal is the only one reserved for the SC community. The seat had a triangular contest between Congress, SAD and AAP.

At Phagwara, even as it was a four-cornered contest, the turnout was 66.13%. Here, BSP state president Jasbir Singh Garhi is contesting against BJP candidate and former Union minister
