Insurance firm directed to pay 10k for rejecting claim

Ludhiana: The district consumer disputes redressal commission has ordered a life insurance firm to pay a compensation of Rs 10,000 for declining the insurance claim of a person who died following a paralytic attack. The commission comprising its president Sanjeev Batra and members Jaswinder Singh and Monika Bhagat ordered the firm to settle and reimburse the claims of complainants Ghan Singh and Parminder Singh Bhullar of Manuke village, Jagraon, strictly in accordance with policy terms, within 30 days.
As per the complaint, deceased Balwant Singh, son of Ghan Singh and father of Parminder Singh Bhullar, had purchased two life insurance policies on October 3, 2016 for a sum assured of Rs 3,23,498 and on October 27, 2018 for a sum of Rs 1,06,806 towards death benefits from the opposite party and was paying a premium as well. The complainant stated that on December 6, 2018, Balwant suffered a paralytic attack and was admitted to a hospital in Jalandhar where he passed away on December 10, 2018. An approximate sum of Rs 1,50,000 was spent on his treatment. After his death, the complainants lodged a claim with the opposite party but it was declined vide letters dated March 15, 2019 and April 12, 2019 on the ground that the deceased was suffering from coronary artery disease prior to the issuance of the policy. However, Balwant’s kin said he was not suffering from any such problem nor was he taking any treatment.
