LUDHIANA: Fireman Sukhdeep Singh, who took the risk of taking the leaking ammonia tanker away to a safer place from the accident site on Saturday, would be honored on Independence Day and may get a permanent job too.
"The fireman showed his dedication and kept his work above everything and endangered his life to save others. Thus we have decided to honour him on August 15," said Ludhiana municipal corporation commissioner and acting deputy commissioner GK Singh while talking to TOI.
He further informed that they have also initiated a procedure to make him permanent. "We have written in this regard to the government already," added Singh.
Meanwhile, president Doraha Nagar Council Bant Singh Duburji also said, "We are writing to the government for giving a due honour to the young man. We have written for providing him a permanent job in the department. This is the least we can do for these brave people who saved others. We are also identifying other people who worked selflessly and we will honour them at a local level function and we would recommend their names for state level honors as well."
The ammonia gas leak tragedy in Doraha could have been more devastating if this 29-year-old brave fireman Sukhdeep Singh had not driven the tanker away from the spot to a lonely place when all other drivers had refused to do so fearing for their lives. This fireman, who was not even provided a uniform and worked on a temporary basis since December 2014, had driven the tanker away from the accident spot.
