lohri (Lohri of girls) in meaningful way.
Gurdas Mann, Surjit Patar, Pammi Bai, Rana Ranbir and writer Jaswant Jafar on Saturday, assembled at Sangrur’ war Heroes stadium and stressed the need to change outlook towards the young girls to reform the society for the better.
Taking the theme as ‘every female is a daughter first’ all the assembled prominent Punjabis asked the masses it is high time to change our behaviourial attitude towards the fairer sex.
Sahitya Akademy and Saraswati Samman award winner poet and author Surjit Patar in his poetical way called upon masses to change their thinking towards girls who are like our own sisters, daughters. Reciting his poem 'ek rukh nu jado aag laggi' (when a tree caught fire) about girls, Patar said “till when we not start considering the girls as treasure trove, we fail to respect them and we should come to the rescue of every girl, who is in trouble”.
Acclaimed Punjabi singer Gurdas Mann terming the Delhi gang rape as a blot on the face of our civil society said it is high time we change our thinking and consider every female as sister, daughter.
Dhuri based the Malwa welfare society had organized the day as international daughter day and asked everyone present to pledge to respect the females.
Society president Parminder Singh and secretary Gurpreet Singh said society has decided to observe January 12 every year as daughters’ day and we pledge to protect every female.
Scientific awareness and social welfare forum on the other hand burnt the effigies of six accused of Delhi gang-rape case and demanded death sentence for them.
