Ludhiana: An NRI from Australia died after falling into a drain at a village in Malaoud area of Khanna. The deceased has been identified as around 37-year-old Varinder Singh Gill of Bulara village in Ludhiana. Police said that had been living in Australia for around 12 years. He lived with his wife and nine-year-old son and had returned to India about three to four months back.

On Feb 3, he had gone to Kular village in Maloud for a jago function (marriage related ceremony) and he drank too much alcohol, police said. They added that the CCTV camera installed in the area near the drain shows the deceased standing alone and talking on the phone at around 1am on Feb 4. Then he lost his balance and fell into the drain.
Police said that they received information at around 5am on Feb 4, after which they recovered the body of the deceased. Preliminary findings by doctors suggest that he died of a brain injury. DSP Payal Nikhil Garg said that inquest proceedings had been initiated under section 174 of the CrPc. He ruled out foul play in the death.
