Driving or patience test?
LUDHIANA: Most people do not believe in the driving test which district transport department conducts before issuing driving licence, but a few who prefer to follow norms are harassed. The department officials ask them to reach office at 9.30 am but they are made to wait till noon.
An applicant said, “We have been compelled to wait for the officials here for the past two hours in this sultry weather.”
Another applicant said, “If they cannot arrive in the morning, they should have called us in the afternoon.

We could have planned our day accordingly. But despite the complaints, nothing has been done in the direction.”
“If we apply for the licence through agent , we need to shell out Rs 700 whereas the government rate is Rs 300 and every person is not in a position to spend the extra Rs 400,” said another resident.
The department conducts driving test every Monday, Wednesday and Friday near Punjabi Bhawan. Nearly 25–30 applicants are invited on the scheduled day.
District transport officer Ashwani Kumar Sharma said, “Yes, I have received complaints in this regard. But the scenario is same across Punjab as we have shortage of Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVI). The person who performs here also takes care of Fatehgarh Sahib. So he is available here for only three days.”
Suggesting solution, he said, “Although we have started asking people to come a bit late, on the administrative front, I have asked the official to finish works by staying late so that public do not suffer.”
