Complainant’s wait ends after 519 days, 2,595 hrs of protest

Ludhiana: She waited for 519 days and protested for 2,595 hours outside the commissioner of police (CP) office, seeking justice in the rape case against Lok Insaaf Party chief Simarjit Singh Bains. The wait of the complainant ended on Monday, when Simarjit, along with his brother Paramjeet Singh Pamma, PA Pardeep Kumar Gogi, accomplices Jasbir Kaur Bhabi and Baljinder Kaur, surrendered before the court.The previous week, Ludhiana police had arrested Simarjit’s brother Karamjeet Singh and friend Sukhchain Singh.The 44-year-old complainant began her protest outside the CP office on February 8, 2021, to get an FIR lodged against the former Atam Nagar constituency MLA and his accomplices, accused of conspiracy and other charges. After five months, on July 10, 2021, Division 6 police lodged the FIR following an inquiry. However, the police did not arrest any of the accused for a year.The complainant said, “Simarjit and his accomplices had been roaming freely despite the FIR. The police sheltered him due to political pressure and had also stated before the court that Simarjit is a public figure and cannot abscond and arresting him could cause a law and order issue. Even now, police could not arrest him and he surrendered before the court with his accomplices. My wait has ended for the time being. Now, we will fight against the accused in the court.”“During the time, the police chief changed thrice. The complaint was lodged when Rakesh Agarwal was the commissioner of police. The post was then taken over by Naunihal Singh, Gurpreet Bhullar and now Kaustubh Sharma. But nobody could arrest him. I got justice because of court, advocate Harish Rai Dhanda and supporter Balwinder Singh Sekhon. The government and the police kept sheltering Simarjit,” she added.The complainant used to sit in protest outside the CP office every day, including on holidays, from 10am to 3pm.
