LUDHIANA: A series of medical camps were held at many hospitals across the city on the occasion of
World Diabetes Day on Saturday.
DMCH organized a free medical camp where around 300 patients were medically examined and given free blood sugar test to assess the risk of developing the disease. Patients were also offered free counselling by the specialists of the diabetes and endocrinology department.
Patients also underwent free body mass & fat analysis test, blood sugar, diabetic foot.
Medicines and insulin pens were also distributed among them.
Dr Parminder Singh, head of endocrinology at DMCH, said, "World Diabetes Day is observed to spread awareness of diabetes, its rising prevalence and to prevent it as far as
possible."
He said diabetes was a silent killer disease which affected vital organs, including kidney, heart, eyes, nerves and brain.
He said complications could be reduced with proper treatment and regular check-up from the qualified specialist.
Besides, adopting a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, taking prescribed medicine regularly, checking blood glucose daily and avoid smoking.
Meanwhile, students of college of nursing, DMCH, also put up posters depicting diabetes-related symptoms and its prevention at Dumra Auditorium.
A Diabetes mela was also organized by Medicity hospital where patients were given free blood tests like sugar, lipid profile etc.
The hospital authorities also announced to provide one month free treatment to diabetics kids.
Likewise, the national integrated medical association also organized a similar camp at Shivpuri.
Dr Surendra Gupta said increasing incidence of diabetes was a major challenge for healthcare professionals.
Deep Hospital has also come up with a novel way to create awareness among diabetic patients. They have formed juvenile clubs where patients will be educated on the disease and results of blood tests will be sent through mails or couriers.
