LUDHIANA: After residents raised objections and the TOI highlighted the issue of car-o-bar, the

traffic police

on Saturday night set up

special check-posts

in

Ludhiana at South City

and near a famous chicken corner under Gill Road flyover.

The residents of South City and adjoining areas have been complaining that people drinking inside or on the bonnet of cars created a lot of nuisance and they even urinated in the open, embarrassing women and children in the evening. Residents had also led a campaign against the menace.

Industrialist Mridula Jain, who spearheaded the campaign, said for the past five months she had been facing anger of some miscreants, who dumped garbage outside her house. She said fewer complaints were coming now not because the problem has been solved, but because few people venture out in these areas at night due to cold weather. “Police efforts will surely provide some relief,“ she added.

Social activist Radhika Jait wani said, “This idea of drinking in cars outside food joints and residential colonies is dangerous and sets a bad example for children. Police and other authorities concerned have a greater role to play in curbing this problem through stricter laws and bigger fines.“

Maneet Dewan from `I am an NGO' said similar action was taken around a month ago too, but the eateries again started serving drinks and food in cars.ADCP (traffic) Dhruv Dahiya said if residents of the city were also facing similar trouble, they could contact police and special check-posts would be set up.
