LUDHIANA: After the municipal corporation and Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board (PWSSB) rejected the proposal of providing space for installing Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at the already existing Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Bhattian, a high-powered committee would now suggest the state government to acquire land along the STP.
The team, constituted by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and led by cabinet minister Hira Singh Gabria, was formed to help find space for setting up the common treatment place. The members held discussions with residents of Bahadurke so that details could be chalked out about the CETP.
However, the residents opposed to the idea, stating it would not be viable to establish the plant there. Hence, the team, which also has DC Vikas Garg and some councillors as members, shifted its attention towards Bhattian. However, officers of MC and PWSSB reportedly informed the panel that it was not possible to provide 109 acre land for setting up the CETP.
Though the team subsequently panned its focus towards vacant land alongside Bahadurke for the plant. Again, this proposal did not get approval.
Now, a fresh proposal regarding land acquisition along the existing STP has reportedly been made. It is being mulled that the CETP be joined with the existing plant. Some team members have reportedly stated that the STP is not running to its full capacity and so this plan could work out. While minister Gabria was not available for comments, the DC said they would submit a proposal in the matter to the chief minister.
Plant problem In order to ensure zero discharge in Buddha Nullah, the state government decided that two CETPs should be installed at Bahadurke Road and Tajpur Road to treat the discharge from dyeing units. Though land for setting up the plant at Tajpur Road has been finalized, the proposed plant at Bahadurke has run into rough weather as no proposal submitted till date has found approval
