LUDHIANA: Five students of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, won awards for their project Effect of heavy metal contamination' during the National level Children Science Congress 2010 at VELS university, Chennai.
The project, managed by Pulkit Arora, Ketan Kohli, Preetika Handa, Gurjap Singh and Himani Sharma,was also popular in the 98th Indian Science Congress at SRM University, Tamil Nadu.
The assignment focused on Buddha Nullah where maximum contamination of heavy metals by electroplating industry is suspected. Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) authorities said there is a rise in the poisoning of soil and plants.
The project was among the top 30 out of 700 presentations from the country and awarded the A+' grade. Judges praised the members for their efforts to solve community issues and efficient team work.
Pulkit Arora of class X said electroplating industries route contaminated water through Buddha Nullah. He was proud for his efforts for society’s uplift and would spread awareness, he added.
Preetika Handa of class X pamphlets were distributed though campaigns and rallies and added that the industries have recognized the project and started working on the issue. Himani Sharma of class X said, If I get a chance, I would love to work on this project to help people avoid the harmful affects and industries should be responsible to curb the poisoning.".
