Ludhiana: A 22-year-old man died after a truck collided with his bike on Oswal Road, near Sherpur Chowk, on Tuesday.
Victim Abhishek Shah, a resident of Mahalaxmi Nagar, was pursuing an under-graduation course through correspondence.
His father Mithilesh Shah said, “Due to the poor financial state of the family,
Abhishek could not attend a regular college and worked as a marking agent with a private company.
He left the house for work around 9.30am. One-and-a-half-hour later, we received a call from the police that he has died in an accident.”
Sherpur police post ASI Onkar Singh said, “The truck was going towards the main highway. Abhishek was behind it on his motorcycle. The truck’s rear hit his bike as he tried to overtake it. Passersby raised the alarm, but the truck driver did not listen and ran over Abhishek.”
Infuriated, people pelted the truck with stones to stop it. They thrashed its driver and handed him over to the police. The also took Abhishek to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The police then contacted his family. The eyewitnesses said Abhishek was wearing a helmet.
The truck driver, Najar Singh, 45, a resident of Amloh, Fatehgarh Sahib, has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the IPC.
