LUCKNOW: The change of government in the state has hit the renovation of Lucknow zoo which was set for a new and greener look under a grandiose plan.
The
Mayawati government had sanctioned Rs 24.72 crore for the construction and renovation of the zoo and Nirman Nigam, the agency responsible for the works, had started the work about two years back. But it was suddenly stopped two months back.
Zoo officials, though, clueless why the construction was stopped mid-way are hopeful that it would resume soon. "They (Nirman Nigam) have assured us that they will re-start the construction soon," said zoo director Renu Singh. The major portion of sanctioned funds has also been released.
The incomplete construction and dismantled structures, however, give zoo a shabby look these days.
The makeover plan envisages many things. Considering that zoo visitors comprise all age-groups, it has to be made appealing to cross section of people. While a children's park with modern swings is already on the anvil, plan is to supplement greenery at the place.
The new massive gates will replace the old ones. In fact, the new structures can be seen lying at the place and rusting. The historical connect of the zoo will be highlighted to make it more appealing to Lucknowites and also to people coming from other parts of the state.
A new visitors room, stainless benches, new boundary wall, CC pavers, stone cladding, better drinking water facility for visitors, better lawns with new variety of grass will add to the look and feel of the zoo in days to come, provided the agency resumes the work.
