Lucknow: It was an unusually delightful sight at zoo on Thursday morning. There were colourful balloons all around and a table was laid out with four big cakes, each with the face of a lion, complete with a mane, on it.
The occasion was the first birthday of the four cubs born to 6-year-old lioness
Vasundhara
on September 1, 2015.
It was the first-of-its-kind experience for visitors, especially children, to
Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Prani Udyan
. 'Wow' was the word children uttered on seeing the chocolate cakes, loads of decoration and refreshments near the lioness's enclosure.
The children were ecstatic when they were invited to cut the cake along with the keepers of the cubs.
After the cake cutting, a special discussion session was organised with the keepers of the cubs. Not only children but even grown-ups were excited with queries on the one-year-olds.
"I was keen to know about the cubs' behaviour. This session was helpful and informative," said
Vaishali Singh Sengar
, a 12-year-old visitor.
The cubs are close to their mother who lives with them in the same enclosure. They feed on her milk from time to time apart from the intake of meat, said
Gupta
. The birthday cubs, however, do not have names as yet as they look alike.
"It's difficult to differentiate between them. We can't name them unless we know their gender," said Gupta, while grabbing a piece of cake.
