Police said the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon near a brick kiln in the Suratganj area. Locals alerted the police after spotting a woman engulfed in flames. She was rushed to a community health centre and later referred to hospitals in Lucknow, where she succumbed to her injuries late Thursday.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim's elder sister, police registered an FIR against Akhilesh Yadav and three unidentified associates on Friday evening.
The complainant alleged that her sister was sexually assaulted before being set ablaze. She stated that her younger sister had left home earlier in the day, and upon receiving information about a woman being burnt, she rushed to the spot only to find her sister in a burnt and naked condition.
A purported video of the victim, recorded shortly after the incident, is circulating on social media.
SHO Ashutosh Mishra said Akhilesh was detained for questioning.
