Observing the 29th anniversary of the incident, a dozen people from BJP and

VHP

, including half a dozen seers, gathered to pay tributes to the slain kar sevaks at Digambar Akhara in Ayodhya.

VHP spokesman Sharad Sharma said, "There were around a dozen people to pay tributes to the kar sevaks."

The district administration, which is keeping a strict vigil in and around Ayodhya ahead of the SC verdict, was not aware of the gathering.

To a query by TOI on permission to the event, Ayodhya resident magistrate KD Sharma and circle officer Amar Singh said that they were not aware of any such gathering.

The event, held every year since 1991, was attended by Ayodhya mayor Rishikesh Upadhyay, Digambar Akhara mahant Suresh Das and VHP spokesman Sharad Sharma.

On October 30 and November 1, 1990, thousands of kar sevaks had gathered in Ayodhya on VHP's call to kar seva for Ram temple. Then chief minister of UP Mulayam Singh Yadav had ordered the firing on the crowd.
