LUCKNOW: Ajoy Banerjee, 45, who works as a copy-editor for a publishing house, spends almost 8 to 10 hours a day on laptop and thereafter stays on video calls with foreign clients on mobile for over two hours.
Due to exposure on the screen over a prolonged period, Banerjee started suffering from strain in eyes, frequent headache and weak eyesight. The problems were sorted out after lifestyle changes and a month-long treatment.
Dr Sanjay Saxena, ophthalmologist and secretary Indian Medical Association(IMA) Lucknow Chapter, shared Banerjee’s example at the continuing medical education (CME) programme on Sunday.

To explain how harmful prolonged screen time could be, Dr Sanjay Saxena, said, “Banerjee came to me when he started losing eyesight and he is not the only one. People are spending about an average 10 hours on screen that is resulting in dryness, strain and infection in eyes. Taking short breaks might help in reducing adverse effects.”
Another ophthalmologist Dr Amit Yadav said, “To avoid screen time issues people should follow the 20-20-20 rule which means every 20 minutes, give your eyes a break by looking at an object, which is 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This allows your eyes to relax.”
Vitreoretinal specialist Dr Aloy Majumdar said, “Such people who can’t avoid screens should also keep lubricating eye drops after consulting a doctor.”
Meanwhile, neurologist Dr Ashwini Kumar Mishra briefed the gathering about Alzheimer’s disease. He said that it can be treated in an early stage.
