LUCKNOW: Concerned over growing air pollution levels, Uttar Pradesh energy minister Shrikant Sharma rode a bicycle from his official residence to a power sub-station in Vrindavan Yojana for a surprise inspection on Friday morning. The power sub-station, located in Sector 5D of Vrindavan Yojana, is 10km away from Sharma’s residence on Kalidas Marg.

Asked about his 10km cycle ride for official work, the minister said it was an effort towards reducing air pollution. “The air pollution levels are alarmingly high in the country and urgent steps are needed to control it.”

“People are messaging me to ask what can be done to curb it. Keeping such things in view, I opted for the bicycle instead of my official vehicle to save fuel emission,” the minister added.

Sharma has also ordered a crackdown on power pilferage and incorrect billing in the state and has told officials to fix these issues at the earliest.
