Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from UP gets jail, faces disqualification

Singh, 64, is set to be disqualified from UP assembly as an 2013 SC order mandates that any MP, MLA or MLC convicted and given two years' jail will lose membership of the House. Singh will be the second BJP MLA to be disqualified in a month in UP. In December, Ramdular Gond, the MLA from Duddhi, was sentenced to 25 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor.

Singh was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced. The court granted Singh bail. His counsel said they would challeng the order in a higher court.

Recalling the crime that took place on September 2, 2002, SHO Chandra Sharma, said: "The then SDM, Lal Mani Mishra, was recording the statement of an accused when Sureshwar entered the officer's chamber and created obstruction."
