LUCKNOW: A 38-year-old undertrial died under mysterious circumstances while undergoing treatment at KGMU Trauma Centre on Monday with his family alleging that police torture led to his death.
Abdul Rahim was arrested on January 14 night in an was an auto-lifting case and was produced in court the next day and sent to Gosainganj prison.
ASP (west) Vikas Chandra Tripathi said that medical examination of Rahim at a hospital in Thakurganj before producing him in court showed no visible injury.

However, a source in Gosaiganj jail told TOI that at the time of entry, Rahim had told jail officials that he had injuries on shoulder, hip and hands.“Rahim started getting fits from January 16 and was admitted to in-house hospital. When his condition deteriorated on January 19, he was sent to the Balrampur hospital where doctors diagnosed neuro disorder and referred him to KGMU where he succumbedon Monday,” he said. Rahim’s brother Khalil, however, told TOI that when he went to meet him in prison on January 18, he had complained of police torture.
SSP Lucknow Kalanidhi Naithani told TOI that jail authorities informed him that Rahim had revealed that he had frequent seizures which was probably due to some neuro disorder. “The inquest would be performed under a magistrate and a autopsy by a panel of doctors,” said Naithani.
