Lucknow: The department of endocrine surgery at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Management Sciences (SGPGIMS) marked World Cancer Day on Tuesday with a programme focusing on cancer awareness, survivor support and the importance of early diagnosis.SGPGIMS director Dr R K Dhiman stressed the need for timely detection, a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and compassionate care for cancer patients and survivors. He said awareness and early intervention play a crucial role in improving survival outcomes.

Head of the department of endocrine surgery, Dr Gaurav Agarwal, highlighted the expanding role of endocrine surgery in managing thyroid and other endocrine cancers, reaffirming the institute's commitment to patient-centric, advanced cancer care. The event, organised under the leadership of Dr Gyan Chand, aimed to dispel myths related to cancer and encourage survivor engagement. Motivational speaker D K Verma addressed the gathering, inspiring patients and caregivers with messages of resilience and positivity. Bollywood actor Puneet Shukla also interacted with patients and survivors, offering words of encouragement. Dr Anjali Mishra discussed myths and facts related to breast cancer, while Dr Sabaretnam and Dr Rinel M spoke on thyroid cancer awareness. A cancer survivors' meet, where survivors shared their journeys, was a key highlight of the programme.
