Ruling the roost for over 200 years on the global culinary platter, Lakhnawi cuisine has for the past over a century been distinct for a rather humble entree. Tunday Kebab is now synonymous with the city. In a recently released list by Taste Atlas of 150 legendary restaurants across the world, Lucknow’s Tunday Kababi ranked 7th for its iconic galouti kebabs. When it comes to gastronomic experience of Lucknow, the 118- year old shop needs no introduction as the one-stop shop for succulent kebabs enticing gourmets since the time it began. Over the decades, the shop and the kebabs have been enjoyed by celebrities including Dileep Kumar, Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, to name some.

Talking to TOI, the owner and third generation family member, Muhammad Usman, said that the list of celebrities and B-town stars has grown so long that he doesn’t keep record any more. “The interesting part is that celebrities visiting our shop have travelled the world, yet they are compelled to try something that is basically just Lucknow’s street food,” said Muhammad Usman, who has also represented Lucknow and the famous kebabs on many international food festivals.

Celebrity chefs Vikas Khanna, Padma Shri Imtiaz Qureshi, among others, too have been credited for popularising the local platter of kebabs and biryani internationally. Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna has organised Lucknow food festivals in the past at his resturants in New York, USA. Padma Shri Imtiaz Qureshi took up on himself to teach another multi Michelin star chef Gordon Ramsay how to make goat biryani. Ramsay visited Lucknow as part of his cooking episodes in India and met Qureshi (also a Lucknow native) to learn the traditional goat biryani and termed it of the best Indian dishes.
