LUCKNOW: It reminded of the bygone Nawabi era when Wajid Ali Shah organised lavish daawat-e-aam. The 'chicken mela' organised by UP Poultry Farmers Association (UPPFA) satiated the taste buds of more than 2,000 chicken-curry, chicken-tikka and chicken-biryani lovers on Wednesday. It took just a couple of hours for 5,000 people to consume a cuisine cooked from more than 4,000 kilograms of chicken and 5,000 eggs.
However, the aam admi of today had a treat at throw-away prices.
The day long treat was an attempt by poultry farmers to fight with the bird flu hoopla which adversely affected their business in February."The sales of chicken dropped by 70-80 per cent as soon as the news of bird flu flashed. But there was no such threat in UP. The chicken mela was an attempt to tell people about the brighter side of eating the white meat, telling them that there was no bird flu in UP," said a member, UPPFA, Dr Sandeep Malik......President, UPPFA, Devesh Rastogi pointed that hoopla had created a fear among people. "Often what happens is that the awe goes off when a person sees another doing the same thing. And chicken cooked in Lakhnavi flavour compels one to re-think over his appetite. So our purpose was solved." When The Times of India asked a person who enjoyed eating fried egg, he said, "the food is good, cheap and tasty. I could not resist myself as I have not had chicken from the past one month all because of the bird flu scare. But now its all gone." As expected, poultry owners were successful in their aim. As evident from a food-lover Mukund Gupta's view. "We have no reasons for believing in the avian flu scare when media, union health ministry, national egg coordination committee (the body that regulates the price of egg) and Bromas (the national body scaling the price of chicken) says that eating chicken is safe."
