Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday gave laptops to top five position holders of UP Board’s High School and Intermediate examinations and described the move as an attempt to “remind the BJP of its promise of giving laptops and two-wheelers to students”.
After the event, party members presented bouquets, crowns and mementoes to the SP chief to mark his 49th birthday celebrations.
“Our party is not in the government, so we are giving free laptops to only the first five toppers. We want to encourage these hardworking students to always follow the path of hard work and dedication like they did to achieve the results that they have in High School and Intermediate examinations,” Akhilesh said, addressing the students, their families and party leaders who had gathered for the event.
“During the SP regime, free laptops were distributed to students. Today, I hope that by giving laptops to only the first five toppers, we will be able to remind the present BJP government of the promise that it had made before the elections regarding distribution of laptops and two-wheelers to students. Hope the government will soon announce the schedule of distributing free laptops to students,” he said.
The toppers who were presented free laptops included Class 10 (UP Board) students Prince Patel, Kiran Kushwaha, Palak Awasthi, Nainshi Verma and Pranshi Dwivedi (all from Kanpur), Astha Singh (Prayagraj), Ekta Verma (Sitapur), Atharwa Srivastava (Moradabad) and Anamika Sharma (Kannauj). The intermediate toppers included Anshika Yadav, Jiya Mishra and Anchal Yadav (all from Prayagraj), Balkrishna and Divyanshi (Fatehpur), Yogesh Pratap Singh and Abhimanyu Verma (Barabanki), Prakhar Pathak (Kanpur), Jatin Raj (Moradabad), Swati Goswami (Lucknow), and Shreya Soni (Sultanpur).
The event coincided with the celebration of the 49th birthday of SP chief at the party headquarters. A ‘bhandara’ was organised near the party office in Lucknow while blood donation camps, ‘yagya’ and ‘puja’ were held across the state by party leaders to mark the occasion. In Saharanpur, SP MLA Ashu Malik organised a mass marriage of 21 girls belonging to poor families as part of SP chief’s birthday celebrations. Akhilesh Yadav joined the event through video conferencing and wished the couples a happy married life.
