LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party Chattra Sabha candidate, Abhishek Singh ‘Ashu’ captured the prestigious Lucknow University Students Union president’s post defeating his nearest rival Vijay Kumar Singh ‘Pintu’ of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) by 741 votes.
Ashu, who bagged 1,718 votes has created a record of sorts by winning the president’s seat on the first attempt.
He had also bagged the post of vice-president in 2000 on his first attenpt. While Dhananjay Upadhyay of rebel SP came third with 922 votes, Bajrangi Singh ‘Bajju’ of rebel ABVP was fourth with 896 votes. Shantanu Sharma, with 310 votes was fifth.
The counting for the post of general secretary was still on past midnight. It appeared to be a close contest among Shivbhushan Singh of ABVP, Upendra Singh Manu, Subhash Yadav and Vinod Tripathi. Rajpal Kashyap and Pawan Pandey were neck and neck for the post of vice-president till midnight.
A large number of votes were declared invalid due to faulty folding by voters. Meenakshi Singh, Mukesh Mishra and Jitendra Nath Tiwari were elected science representatives. Ajit Kumar Rao and Deepak Singh were elected commerce representatives and for the post of law representative Ravi Tripathi, Vinod Kumar Mishra and Satyaprakash Singh emerged victorious. Bhanu Pratap Singh was elected as education representative. Akhand Pratap Singh, Sarvesh Sharma, Ajay Verma and Ankur Singh won the post of Arts representative.
