‘Shyam Benegal’s cinema was a mirror to women’s struggles’
Lucknow: The 104th birth anniversary of Shankar Dayal Tiwari was commemorated at the Urdu Akademi on Saturday with a programme celebrating cinema. The event featured a special screening of Shyam Benegal's classic film Mandi, followed by a discussion on his contribution to Indian cinema.
Actor and author, Atul Tiwari, said, "Shyam Benegal's cinema was a mirror to the silent struggles of oppressed women in India. His films gave a voice to those unheard, weaving stories that resonated with reality." A documentary on Benegal's career was also showcased. Alok Bajpai, psychiatrist and author, equated Benegal's storytelling with that of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray.
