LUCKNOW: 'Shehanshah' is all set to start his second innings in life. The change in him is unbelievable. He is donning a totally new look. And at sixty years of age he all set to tread a path unknown to him. In his new role, he will be leading a team of at least half-a-dozen members. Shehanshah is a steam engine, manufactured in 1947, which has been brought to the Charbagh Loco Workshop for some improvements and changes.
He will be reused in the new 'Palace on Wheels' plying on 16-kilometre route between Sikandrabad to Volarum. The new train is expected to start in the first week of October.
The very look of the engine reminds one of movie scenes, when one would see two people throwing coal into the burner, steam coming of the chimney and the sound of the string pull bell at regular intervals. Some of the movies you would definitely come to think of are like 'Sholay' 'Pakeezah' and 'Gadar'. Chief Manager of the Loco Workshop, Harsh Kumar revealed that the entire components to regulate the engine are made of pure brass and are very rare now...
... "There is around one tonne of brass in the engine, the current value of which would be around 2.5 lakh, he said. "This engine was brought to our workshop from Revadi, where it had been kept as a heritage, for conversion of its vacuum break into air breaks. This engine will then be used in the new Palace on Wheels," said Kumar. He added that it is necessary to change the breaking system as all the bogies have air break system. Apart from the brake change, we have added some components from our side. "Emergency breaks and pressure indicators have been installed in the engine for it smooth functioning. We have also painted its exterior to give it a rich new look," he added.
