LUCKNOW: In a sharp turn of events, for this family from Assam, a grave tragedy followed the bliss of hope.
The group of five people visited the city in June for treatment of one of the travelling members at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI). Having been prescribed surgery by doctors in Assam, the group was relieved when PGI doctors said it was a minor kidney problem.

They were going to Delhi happily on way to Assam. However, fate had other plans.
The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) Volvo in which they were travelling turned over after hitting the divider near Kanpur Dehat around 1.30 am on June 20.
While four members of the group escaped with injuries, which needed hospitalization, one of the accompanying members, 23-year-old Jahnabi Kalita, got stuck under the window pane of the bus.
The relief crane could reach the spot nearly an hour after the accident. In the meantime, Jahnabi was rescued somehow from the ill-fated bus and was taken to a nearby hospital.
"She had the most serious injuries among all of us. Her jaw was broken and her right hand was crushed under the glass and metal and badly damaged. It was a nightmare. We were stuck mid-way with no knowledge of which city we were in. We tried to stop trucks and take help. No one stopped. After much effort, we managed to know that we were near Kanpur. When the crane came, Jahnabi was writhing in pain," said Ajay Mishra, who was part of the group.

During treatment, Jahnabi's right hand had to be amputated. She was even on a ventilator for a few days. Doctors treating her at the private hospital in Kanpur say that she is still not out of danger. Her grave injuries are still fresh but she has to be moved out from the ICU because the family is unable to continue to pay for the treatment there.
"We are unable to meet the expenses. We have cut down on everything for her treatment. We just hope that she comes out of the hospital and we take her back to Assam without any complications," said Jahnabi's mother, who travelled to Kanpur to be by her side after she came to know about the accident.
"We expected the government to help us. The bus was run by UP roadways. We thought someone would come to ask about our whereabouts. We have lost many of our belongings. Stuck in an unknown city, we have forgotten our injuries while helping her. Monetary crisis is now affecting her treatment. She has lost her hand, we only wish she gets the best treatment possible now," said Ajay, adding that the girl now is in the general ward of the private hospital.
While Jahnabi is recuperating from her injuries, on Monday night, another Volvo bus en route to Delhi from Lucknow via Kanpur, collided with a truck, turned over and hit an electricity pole around 2 am in Panki near Kanpur. Two passengers, including a woman, were killed and around a dozen injured.
