LUCKNOW: Police on Sunday announced a cash reward of Rs 17,500 on the head of Vijay Menon, an undertrial, who escaped from the police custody from outside the district court on Saturday afternoon, leaving two constables injured and killing a property dealer.
Senior Superintendent of police (SSP), Lucknow, Kamal Saxena told TOI that the IG, Lucknow zone, Sulkhan Singh had announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 on Menon''s head.
DIG, Lucknow, Jag Mohan Yadav, too, has announced a cash reward of Rs 5000 on the fugitive, while the SSP himself has announced a reward of Rs 2,500.
Meanwhile, five police teams, which were sent to adjoining districts in search of Menon, were yet to receive any significant clue which could promise an early breakthrough.
The police have also launched a manhunt for associates of Menon. "Though Menon belongs to Bihar but we are not sure whether he has gone there," Saxena said.
Meanwhile, the case took an interesting turn on Sunday when an eyewitness told TOI that Menon did not fire a single shot. He said that the person, who fled from the crime spot just after the shootout and who was clad in a pair of white trousers, did not have any weapon. "The shots were fired by a youth, who was following him," he added.
The police now felt that the "escape" was planned meticulously and Menon enjoyed the support of a major gang of criminals.
