The programme, which involves vaccination of newborns, infants and children up to five years, was suspended on March 25 following an advisory by the government. Parents who could afford it were getting their newborns immunised at private clinics by paying around Rs 10,000 for vaccination, which is otherwise available free or at minimal cost in a government facility.

Though immunisation has partially resumed, some of the busiest hospitals in Gomtinagar and Mahanagar are yet to restore the facility. Lucknow CMO Dr Narendra Agarwal said, “We have already started immunisation programme at BMCs and will soon resume it in other hospitals too.”

Sanjay Niranjan,

executive board

member of

Indian Academy of Pediatrics

, had a word of caution for parents visiting BMCs. “Proper hand hygiene should be maintained and parents should avoid staying in hospitals for long. Wearing three-layered mask while visiting any health centre is a must. Using cloth as masks will not give 100% protection.”
