LUCKNOW: The three-member inquiry committee formed by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) to probe the 'fountain scam' has found misappropriation of Rs 12 lakh scam in the construction of two fountains built at Rana Pratap Marg near Jopling Road crossing and another at Mahatma Gandhi Marg near Loreto Convent Intermediate College. The committee has recommended to blacklist the private firm hired to construct these fountains and recovery of the amount from it, besides adverse entries against the street-light department's junior engineer and an assistant engineer who were found to be hand in glove in the embezzlement.
The committee was constituted by municipal commissioner Inderjit Singh on December 23, following a complaint lodged by Nagendra Singh Chauhan, corporator of Hazratganj ward.
Engineering department head, Mahesh Chandra Verma, chief engineer of street-light department Sanjay Katiyar and general manager of Jal Kal Ram Kailash were the members of the committee. The two fountains were constructed last year by a private contractor.
"About 25 square meters of land and Rs 35 lakh each had been approved for both the fountains. The total estimated cost for the construction of both fountains was around Rs 70 lakh," said Verma.
"However, we found that both the fountains have been constructed on the 20 square meter area and their construction cost was Rs 58 lakh ," he added.
Municipal commissioner Inderjit Singh said, " Strict action will be taken against those who are involved in the scam ."
