LUCKNOW: Two members of
UP Commission for Minorities
have shot a missive to the state director general of police (DGP), seeking action against attacks on minorities, particularly Muslims who voted for
BJP in the recently-concluded assembly elections. They sought an action-taken report by April 4 on such crimes, which were reported from Bareilly, Kushinagar and Rae Bareli.
The letter by panel members,
Sardar Parvinder
Singh and
Rumana Siddiqui
, cites media reports of many Muslims being harassed for voting for BJP. Talking to TOI, DGP Mukul Goel, said, “we will act on the minorities panel’s order as per directives.”
Commission member
Parvinder Singh said, “In Bareilly district, a Muslim woman, Nida Khan, was disowned by her family while another woman was given instant triple talaq by her husband for voting for BJP.”
"Kushinagar resident Babar Ali was lynched for celebrating BJP's victory and similar hate crimes have emerged from Rae Bareli district. The constitution guarantees freedom of speech under Article 19 (1) and right to life and liberty as enshrined in Article 21. It is imperative that their constitutional rights be protected," Singh added.
Commission members also sought a government circular, outlining guidelines for probe and swift action against perpetrators of such crime, as per the letter. "We urge the DGP to issue a circular to all senior police officials of all districts and zones, including the ADG, IG, DIG to curb reoccurrence of such incidents," he added.
