On the anvil, lung transplant unit at KGMU
Lucknow: King George's Medical University is establishing an advanced lung transplant unit, a step expected to provide world-class treatment to patients with severe lung diseases within the state. The announcement was made during AIPCON 2026, an advanced interventional pulmonology conference organised by department of pulmonary and critical care medicine at KGMU.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand said the development of sub-specialty services would enable more precise, patient-centred treatment. Former VC Prof Ravi Kant and noted pulmonologist Prof Digambar Behera also highlighted rapid progress in interventional pulmonology in India and growing role of KGMU in the field.Doctors said the department already played a key role in diagnosing and treating lung cancer through advanced bronchoscopy, EBUS-guided investigations, imaging-guided procedures and multidisciplinary oncology care. These techniques help with early and accurate diagnosis, which improves chances of successful treatment.Experts stressed that lung cancer was still one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide and that early detection, regular screening and timely treatment could prevent many such deaths.Specialists pointed out that tobacco use, air pollution, alcohol consumption obesity and lack of physical activity were among major risk factors for cancer and advised people to seek medical consultation if symptoms such as persistent cough, breathlessness, unexplained weight loss or unusual swelling appeared.Organising secretary Prof Ved Prakash said the conference aimed to strengthen skills, introduce advanced techniques and promote collaboration so that patients receive safer and more effective respiratory care.
