Now, UPDC moots medi-city
LUCKNOW: The UP Development Council has done it again. After attracting corporate czars like Adi Godrej, Anil Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Pratap C Reddy and Nandan M Nilekani, besides of course Bill Clinton, to take keen interest in the development of Uttar Pradesh, the Council has now brought in Dr Khalid Hameed, who was the chief executive officer of Cromwell Hospital, London, and is High Sheriff, Greater London, to set up a state-of-the-art 'Medi-city' in the state.
Talking to TOI, chairman of UPDC and member of Parliament (MP) Amar Singh said that UPDC has recommended a proposal to set up a medical city — complete with an airstrip and hotel.

"The stress would be to deliver the best facilities even in the post-operative period," said Singh, adding that the Padma Shri cardiologist had a passion for Lucknow as it was his home town. Singh said that the eminent cardiologist wanted to provide the best medical care in the most informal environment.
In turn, the state government, he said, would be keen to give all necessary clearances to speed up the process, which was expected to be finalised within a fortnight.
The 1,000-bed hospital complex would be accompanied with a hotel so that even the patients' relatives are able to stay comfortably during the post-operative period.
Dr Khalid's representatives held a meeting with officials concerned, including secretary, housing, KL Meena and vice-chairman of Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) BB Singh to discuss the finer details.
Singh said that the representatives, along with the officials, made spot visits to Sitapur Road and the Lucknow-Kanpur Road to select the land on which the 'Medi-city' would be developed. The 1,000-bed facility would be developed in a phased manner on around 100-acre land, said Singh.

The 'Medi-city' would be at par with international standards, which would greatly improve healthcare standards in the city. Lucknow, of course, does have the King George's Medical University and the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences.
However, the city so far lacks a facility which could provide services at par with international standards.
