LUCKNOW: Silver, golden, green, ... umm Yummy. Colours and delicious? You must be wondering. But these are all colours of gujiyas available this Holi to make the festival of colours even more colourful for you. Especially for those with a sweet tooth. After all, gujiyas are synonymous with Holi. No festival is complete without delicious goodies to add to the flavour of the festivities and what more can be asked for in this festival of colour than colourful eatables.
"We have prepared 11 different varieties of gujiya this year, said Ved Prakash Gupta, owner of a renowned sweet shop in Mahanagar. These include apple gujiya, plain gujiya, gujiya dipped in sugar syrup, Kesar gujiya, dry fruits gujiya, Anjeer gujiya, cashewnut gujiya, pista gujiya and almond gujiya. And all with different colours and flavours, he added. While a filling of apple pulp and dry fruits make the apple gujiya special, anjeer or cashewnut or almond gujiyas are prepared from the paste of the specific dry fruit.
To complement the taste of these gujiyas, the filling inside them is changed. Giving an example, he said that almond filling is done in pista gujiyas while kesar masala is filled in cashewnut gujiyas. Ranging from Rs 160 per kg to Rs 800 per kg, these gujiyas are attracting people in large numbers. But still the plain gujiyas and gujiyas dipped in sugar syrup rule the market. For personal consumption people still take plain gujiyas, while other varieties are preferred for gift purposes, stated another shop owner, Sanjeev Ahuja. "Nothing can beat the plain gujiyas. They look so traditional, so for personal use I always take plain gujiyas only," said Sonali Sharma, a buyer.
Another major attraction this holi is gift baskets costing Rs 220 upwards. The speciality of these is that for the first time, non-alcoholic beer and herbal gulal are part of the basket. "Containing eatables of all varieties the baskets are becoming popular among the people", said owner of a popular bakery, Mahesh Ahuja. Not only this, we have also come out with diet food and roasted namkeens for the health-conscious, he added. "Grams, Rajasthani papad, moong dal, bhel puri, papdi, sindhi papad, all are available", said Priyanka Singh. I love food but was never be able to eat them. This time it's all mine. I have already taken two to three packets of each, she added. It's really a happy Holi, she said excitedly.
