Lucknow/Ayodhya: The Milkipur assembly constituency of Faizabad-Ayodhya registered 65.35% turnout, marking the highest voter participation since the first election here in 1967.
Bypoll in the constituency was necessitated after
Samajwadi Party MLA Awadhesh Prasad vacated the seat following his election to Lok Sabha from Faizabad in 2024. Prasad had defeated BJP's two-term MP Lallu Singh.
The constituency has over 3.71 lakh registered voters.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the constituency witnessed good electoral participation since early morning.
Voter turnout was 13.34% at 9am which went up to 29.86% at 11am, 44.59% at 1pm and 57.13% by 3pm. By the time the polling process culminated, 65.35% turnout was recorded, which was 5.12% more than the percentage recorded in 2022 state elections (60.23%), in which Awadhesh Prasad had defeated BJP's Baba Gorakhnath. The final poll percentage can go up after the data is compiled from all the 414 polling stations.
Awadhesh Prasad's son Ajit Prasad, a Pasi Dalit, is challenging BJP's Chandra Bhan Paswan, also from the same Dalit subcaste in the constituency having a substantial presence of Dalits. Total 10 candidates are in fray from the constituency.While the BSP is not contesting the bypoll, the Congress is backing its alliance partner SP on the seat. Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) has also fielded a candidate from the seat.
At least 414 polling booths, including 71 critical ones, and 255 polling centres, were set up for polling
According to ECI data, Milkipur assembly constituency recorded 58.46% voter turnout in 2017, 55.47% in 2012, 49.85% in 2007, 54.58% in 2002, 55.27% in 1996, 53.81% in 1993, 46.36% in 1991, 54.28% in 1989, 52.86% in 1985, 45.29% in 1980, 43.6% in 1977, 46.87% in 1974, 45.16% in 1969, and 48.74% in 1967.
Inspector general Pravin Kumar said that voting was held peacefully at all polling stations. "Strict action will be taken against those spreading rumours or indulging in any other illegal activity," he added.
