Melody of Mirabai bhajans now in Urdu too

FAIZABAD: Setting an example of Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb and keeping alive the culture of harmony, a Muslim poet has given a new avatar to Mirabai's bhajans.
After the Urdu translation of the Gita by late Urdu poet Anwar Jalalpuri, his disciple Hashim Raza Jalalpuri has now translated into Urdu bhajans by Mirabai, the 16th century saint who wrote for Lord Krishna.
A resident of Jalalpur in Ambedkarnagar district, Raza has a postgraduate degree in electronic engineering from Aligarh Muslim University. Love for literature and poetry drew him into writing. He also runs an NGO in the name of Mirabai.
It took three years for Hashim to translate the bhajans. He derived 1,510 couplets in Urdu from 209 verses of bhajans composed by Mirabai in the 16th century.
The forenote of the verses has been written by Urdu literature professors Khwaja Ikramuddin and Rana Safvi.
Raza is the son of famous Urdu poets Zulfiqar Jalalpuri and Sarwari Bano.
Raza said the book is titled Naghma Ishq-o-Wafa. It will be released on June 17 at India International Centre in Delhi.
