‘He was worried about academic setback’: MBBS student found hanging in Lucknow hostel room
LUCKNOW: A 22-year-old student of MBBS first-year was found hanging in his hostel room at a private university in Lucknow late Thursday night.
Preliminary information suggested he was distressed after receiving multiple backlogs in his recent examination results.
The student was a resident of Belghat in Gorakhpur and was staying in the hostel to pursue studies in medicine.
According to family members, his semester results were declared about three days ago in which he reportedly received backlogs in several subjects except one.
The student's cousin said he was under stress since the results were announced and was worried about the academic setback. Family members claimed that he spoke to his mother around 8pm on Wednesday and informed her about an online parents' meeting scheduled for the next day. During the conversation, his parents tried to console him and advised him not to worry about the results.
Later that evening, his roommate reportedly asked him to come to the hostel mess for dinner, but he said he would join him in 10 minutes. However, when his roommate returned to the room, he found the door locked from inside.
When there was no response despite repeated knocks, he informed the hostel warden.
When the door was forced open in the presence of the warden, the student was found hanging.
He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The body was sent for post-mortem. Police said statements from hostel staff and students had been recorded to ascertain the circumstances leading to the death.
College authorities said that they would issue a formal statement after the post-mortem report was received.
