Man kills sister, toddler niece over property dispute in UP's Etawah

NEW DELHI: A man allegedly shot dead his sister and three-year-old niece over a property dispute in UP's Etawah, police said on Monday.

The incident took place in Mahera Chungi area late on Sunday night when Harshvardhan, whose father Lavkush Chauhan was a retired chief medical officer, shot and killed his sister Jyoti (40) and her three-year-old daughter Tashu, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar Verma. For the past three years, Jyoti had been residing at her parents' house with her daughter.

Family members rushed to the scene upon hearing gunshots and discovered the mother and daughter lying bloodied, the SSP reported.

During the incident, Lavkush Chauhan was present on the first floor, whilst Jyoti, her husband Rahul, their daughter Tashu and Harshvardhan's wife were on the ground floor.

According to Rahul's statement to the police, Harshvardhan entered the room accompanied by his two sons and fired shots, killing Jyoti and Tashu instantly. Rahul managed to escape the situation.

Jyoti and Rahul were married in Lucknow in 2019. She had been staying with Chauhan for three years to look after her father, while Rahul made frequent visits to the house, as per Chauhan's police statement.

Police investigations revealed that tensions arose after Chauhan transferred ownership of his house and farmland to Jyoti, which greatly angered Harshvardhan and resulted in frequent domestic disputes.
