LUCKNOW: Miffed over his wife's refusal to stay together, a man slit her throat with a knife and then stabbed himself multiple times in Lucknow's Bijnor area on Tuesday. The couple is undergoing a divorce and currently living separately, the police said.
Both the injured husband and wife were admitted to the trauma centre at PGI, said Bijnor inspector Arvind Singh Rana, adding that the woman's family has been informed, and a case will be registered after a formal complaint is received.
"Rani (40), originally from Sitapur, lives separately from her husband, Ramesh Kashyap (42), a resident of Jamunia in Lakhimpur Kheri, in a rented house in the Bijnor area. She is undergoing a divorce case with Ramesh. They have four children, two of whom stay with Rani, while the other two live with their father. Ramesh had been pressuring Rani to live with him for a long time. On Tuesday, he visited Rani's place to take her back, but when Rani refused, an argument ensued, and in a fit of rage, Ramesh attacked her with a knife," said SHO Bijnor Arvind Rana.
Hearing the children's screams, neighbors began to gather at the scene, prompting Ramesh to repeatedly stab himself in the neck. The Bijnor police, alerted by the neighbours, arrived promptly and rushed both to PGI's trauma centre. They are now reported to be out of danger.
