Making Shakespeare easy

LUCKNOW: Shakespeare is best understood when performed, said actor and director Rajat Kapoor who had come to

Lucknow Literature Festival

on Friday for a session titled ‘All the world's a stage’, a tribute to Shakespeare.

Literature enthusiasts turned up to listen to Kapoor, who has staged adaptations of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Macbeth and King Lear with clowns.

“My relationship with Shakespeare is of fear, growing up without being able to comprehend what was being said. Hence, I mixed clowns with Shakespeare,” said the filmmaker.

Kapoor is coming up with another of Shakespeare’s plays in the clown format.

“Through clowns, you can directly go to the essence of something. A clown gives purity which is liberating, the clown format was staged by us at Stratford-upon-Avon in the

United Kingdom

and it received a good response from the people,” said Kapoor.

The fourth edition of Lucknow Literature Festival, organised by Lucknow Expressions Society, UP Tourism, The Times Of India and Navbharat Times, began on Friday.
