LUCKNOW: It was because of Lucknow where lyricist
Javed Akhtar spent most of his childhood years that spirit of communal harmony flows in his blood and showed in his work over the decades in the Hindi film industry. On the final day of the
Lucknow Literature Festival
(LLF) on Sunday , commenting tha Lucknow is big not because of its tall buildings but its tehzeeb and largehearted people, Akhtar shared an anecdote: “In the the 1990s, songs were written around an already composed tune for a ready situation in a film. I was once asked to write an `aarti' around a situation in the film and the director was surprised to see several names I had used for Lord Krishna. When the director asked me how come I knew so much, I said it's because (a) I have studied Urdu and (b) I belong to Lucknow.“
The writer also said while he studied English at Colvin Taluqdars, Urdu in Aligarh and then again English in a Madhya Pradesh university , it was Urdu that helped him most. “Urdu is the language of north India, which like any other language should not be divided on religious lines,“ he said.
