This was informed by doctors and experts during a panel discussion on the second day of 111th foundation celebrations of the surgery department of King George's Medical University (KGMU) on Wednesday.

Speaking on occasion, Prof Pankaj Singh, said, "Kidneys contain millions of tiny blood vessel clusters (glomeruli) that filter waste from blood. Blood pressure and diabetes can cause damage to these blood vessels leading to diabetic nephropathy (decreased kidney function)."

Diabetic nephropathy is a common complication of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Due to this blood vessel clusters are formed in kidneys that hinder the filtering of blood. This can lead to kidney damage and cause high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause further damage by increasing the pressure in the delicate filtering system of the kidneys, he explained.

Prof Abhinav Arun Sonkar, head of the department said, "Worsening blood pressure control, protein in the urine, swelling of feet, ankles, hands or eyes, increased need to urinate are common symptoms of kidney disease."
