LUCKNOW: King George’s Medical University (
KGMU
) will provide super-speciality facilities for children with orthopaedic problems, sportspersons with injuries, people with spine-related problems and patients waiting for joint replacement, within next two years.
UP cabinet on Tuesday approved Rs 86 crore for a separate state-of-the-art building which will house all the four superspecialty services.
Currently, spinal surgery and
arthroplasty
(joint replacement) are functioning as units of orthopedic surgery department which will become separate departments. Sports medicine and paediatric orthopaedic, which are separate departments, will be upgraded.
Besides additional beds and staff, number of faculty members will also go up in all these four units/departments which will help in catering to more patients. “Paediatric orthopaedic department presently examines 300 patients a week in its OPD which will go up by 30%. It will also have two separate operation theatres,” said head, paediatric orthopaedic, Prof Ajai Singh.
“In spinal surgery department, treatment of spinal TB, slip disc, tumour in spine, deformity correction surgery, lateral and sideways curvature of spinal cord among others will be provided,’ said head of spinal surgery department Prof RN Srivastava. Head of sports medicine department Prof Ashish Kumar said the number of patients being examined by sports medicine department would be doubled.
Arthroplasty department will offer special surgeries for joint replacement and multiple joint fractures. “We will be able to cater to five times more patients than presently being treated in the department,” said head of arthroplasty Prof Santosh Kumar.
